  Crossing the Sea

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen。 The title of my speech today is “Crossing the Sea”。

An English poet by the name of Rudyard Kipling once wrote in his poem “We and They”:

“All the people like us are We

  And everyone else is They

  We live over the sea

While They live over the way

We eat pork and beef with cowhorn—handled knives

They who gobble their rice off a leaf

Are horrified out of their lives。”

When these lines first caught my eyes,I was shocked—how could two peoples remain so isolated and ignorant of each other in the past?Today‘s society,of course,is an entirely different picture。 Those people who used to eat with cowhorn—handled knives might be very skillful in using chopsticks, and those people who used to gobble their rice might be as well have taken to fish and chips。

Indeed, just take China as an example:Our modern life has been influenced by Western style of living in so many ways that it’s no longer surprising to see teenagers going crazy about rock—and—roll, whole families dining out at McDonald‘s and even rather elderly people dressed in Apple Jeans。

However, these are only some expressions of the cultural changes taking place in our society today。 What is really going on is a subtle but significant restructuring of the nation’s mentality。 Just look around。

How many college graduates are ready to compete aggressively for every job opportunity, whereas not long ago they were asked just to sit idle and wait for whatever was to be assigned to them by the government?

How many young people are now eager to seek for an independent life whereas only two decades ago they would rely totally on their parents to arrange for their future?Ask anyone who participates in today‘s speech contest。 Who has not come with a will to fight and who has not come determined to achieve self—fulfillment in winning the game? And I’m quite certain that if Confucius had lived to see today‘s China,he would have been horrified to see young lovers kissing each other in public places in an unreserved expression of their passion。

It is therefore evident that we as descendants of an ancient Eastern civilization are already living under strong inf1uence of the Western culture。 But it is not only in China that we find the incorporation of the two cultures。

Take the United States as an example:During the 1980s,in face of the overwhelming competition from Japan, many American companies such as the Ford began to adopt a teamwork management from their rivals, the essence of which, lay at the very core of Eastern culture。

Take the Chinese acupuncture as another example:This traditional treatment of diseases is finally finding its way to the West and hence the underlying notion that illness is resulted from the imbalance between Yin and Yang within the body —— an idea which would strike any Westerner as incredible in the past!

Ladies and Gentlemen,we live in a great epoch when the global integration of economy and the information revolution have brought cultures of the world closer than ever before。 We live in a particular era when countries,East and West, find themselves in need of readjusting their traditional values。 We live,at the same time,at a critical juncture of our evolution because such problems as ethnic conflicts and regional unrest are increasingly posing a threat to the peace and happiness of the whole human race。 To cope with such an era and to embrace an even brighter future,we need to learn to live more harmoniously in a world community which is becoming smaller and smaller。

My dear fellow students, our command of the English language renders it possible for us to gain an insight into Western culture while retaining our own cultural efore,it is our sacred responsibility to promote the cultural exchanges and hence the mutual understanding between China and the rest of the world。

It is my happiest dream that the new generation of Chinese will not only grow up drinking Coca—Cola and watching Hollywood, but also be blessed with the far—reaching benefits of multiple cultures;benefits that our forefathers had never, ever dreamed of。

To end my speech,I would like to quote Rudyard Kipling again:

But once you cross over the sea

You will end by looking on We

As only a sort of They“

  Thank you。

  Ladies and Gentlemen:

How well are we in tune with the rhythm of life? In our busy day to day existence, we don’t often stop to ask ourselves this question。 At least I don’t。 And it wasn’t until I joined a competitive sporting event that I learned a most important lesson – we must place our mind in harmony with the natural order of things to be successful。

Let me tell you what happened。

I decided to take part in an International Marathon in my hometown last year。 Being an ambitious person, I hoped to finish it within 5 hours, accompanied by my friend with whom I had trained。

The big day finally arrived。 “Ready。。。set。。。bang” And we were off。

At first, we kept a rapid pace and ran nonstop。 At this pace, we finished the first 20 kilometers in 2 hours and I thought running a marathon was a piece of cake。 Then my running mate began to slow down。 I urged him to keep running at the same pace but he said no, he wanted to conserve his energy。 I felt I had partnered with the wrong person, therefore, I sprinted on and left him behind in the dust。

A few kilometers later, I began to understand his strategy as my pace slowed to a jog then a walk。 After that I was incapable of moving another step。 I was humiliated as more and more people ran passed me。 More than once I thought “Maybe I should quit。” I started to doubt my ability to finish this race。

At this moment, my running mate caught up with me and slapped me on the back。 “Follow me,” he shouted。 He had balanced his marathon pace and was encouraged me to do the same。 For the rest of this grueling contest, we walked, jogged, ran a few miles, and walked again。 Slowly, painfully but hopefully this time, we established the most suitable pace within the natural flow of our physical capabilities。

Eventually we accomplished our first Marathon of 42 kilometers in 4 and half hours。 I asked myself, what did this marathon mean to me? My Marathon experience became an influential metaphor for my life about how we must learn to pace ourselves in everything, by being in tune with the rhythm of life。

Like the tide that ebbs and flows, we must listen to advice but make our own decisions。 Like the show at dawn and dusk, we must learn to balance pride and modesty。 And from the way the wind can both shout and whisper, we must learn when to be strong and when to be gentle, for everything moves in its own rhythm and its own yin and yang elements。 It is the interaction of these complementary extremes that produces harmony, as Laozi said, extremes meet。 Since the marathon, this notion of two opposite forces working together has been my running partner, so to speak。 Yin and yang exist everywhere, constantly interacting, and never existing in an absolute condition。

Ladies and Gentlemen, life is like running a marathon, let us discover, define and develop a natural rhythm of life, in order to achieve both harmony and success。

  Thank you for listening。

  PREPARED SPEECH

Ladies and Gentlemen: I am really glad I could be with you today。 Now the topic of my speech is Improving our PE system, Promoting the Olympic games spirit。

It is well know that the olympic games happened in Beijing successfully。 China gained the winner and got the most champion gold medal。 We all are proud of it。

Now the Nanjing youth olympic games is just around the corner。 There is a crazy for Gold medal among the sports player。 Even some students go back to the field for a good results。 It seems that everyone is striving for them。

Why are gold medal so attractive? It can be explained by the comments of our nation and society。 Our nation often evaluates a sports player on the basis of whether not the gold medal he or she get。 Usually, the more medals one have, the more respects and opportunities one will have。 gold medal are often regarded as a passport to personal advancement。

Not long ago, I got a news in the newspaper。 It shocked me a lot。 It was reported that the world university gymnastics champion Zhangshangwu was dropped to the street after release from prison。 It was called “MAIYI”

How pathetic! how would it happened? so, so somewhere must be wrong。 What IS theproblen actually?

Ladies and Gentlemen:the problem is our physical education system。 The current system always encourage them to try their utmost to win the game。 It doesn’t enable them to gain the real olmpic games spirit, the player who came out first are not necessary mean a real sportsman。 I mean the “ real sportsman”。

Besides ,this system often drive the coach to cram a lot of awareness all the time。 such as ,country groly, becoming famous and of course money。they are force to train those players become the MACHINES of making medals。

Something must be done to change our current our PE system。 There should be some reasonable and encourageable measures to drive the person who are crazy about sports keep moving, pursue the extreme of our humanbeings。 In a word,we should return back to the real Olympic games spirit: HIGHER, SWIFTER,and STRONGER! And that is what we should do at once!

  Thank you very much!

My grandpa was among the first group of English teachers sent to Australia by the Chinese government in the 1980s, when our country first opened its door。 Off the plane, a hospitable Australian taxi driver asked him, “Where are you going today?” “Where to die?” My grandpa was shocked。 With very limited access to authentic English, he had no idea of the Australian pronunciation for the word “today”。

My mom was much luckier in the 1990s when she went to college。 She had recorded tapes of BBC and VOA news to listen to。 When she stepped on the soil of England, she was much more confident。 The first day after arrival, hungry and tired after a long flight, and with a Chinese stomach longing for hot food and drink, her only wish was to have a big breakfast。 The British waitress approached her asked with a British accent completely comprehensible to her well trained ear, “Madam, would you like a Continental breakfast or an English breakfast?” Well, the European continent is much bigger than England, so must be the breakfast。 She responded: “Continental Breakfast, please。” The waitress took the order and Mom was very satisfied about herself until she discovered the tiny breakfast of cold milk and iced juice, instead of fried bacon and also fried sausages。

I went to an American university for a summer program last year。 After watching a movie, I decided to take a bus back to my apartment。 However the bus didn’t arrive as scheduled。 After waiting for about 20 minutes in the darkness, I was very uneasy and also scared。 I stood there, staring into the direction which the bus should come from。 But there was no bus but a street singer singing some unknown songs with his noisy guitar。 The wind brought a feeling of chill, and as more and more stores closed and fewer and fewer people passed by, I couldn’t help shivering in the cold darkness。 Suddenly, a piece of familiar music flowed into my ear。 It was the best-known Chinese folk song: the Jasmine Flower! He was playing the Jasmine Flower with his guitar。 Automatically, I tuned my Chinese ears to the familiar and nostalgic melody, with my heart warmed and my eyes wet。 He played that music again and again until the bus came and I went aboard 。

From strangeness, misunderstanding to cross cultural resonance, it takes three generations。 The driving force behind the change is globalization, which offers opportunities for cultures to meet, to break down barriers between countries, and to bring peoples together。 When the Chinese folk song played by an American street singer got me through coldness and fear, I also came to realize that intimate connection brought about by globalization and also cross cultural resonance can also help the world get through difficulties and disputes。

Ladies and gentlemen, if you would ask me whether globalization is enough, I will definitely say “no”。 Globalization is a powerful force available to us, enabling people to communicate, to help, and to warm, just like what the American street singer did to me at that cold and dark night。

  The Importance of confidence

Whatever one does, one should do it with confidence。 If one has no confidence, there is little possibility that one would ever achieve anything, especially when one is faced with drawbacks or hardships。 This truth seems to be evident。 However, in reality we do see a lot of people who complain that they like the ability to do something or that their difficulties are too great to be overcome。 For someone, this might be true。 But for many others, this only shows that they have lost heart。

Why do people often feel frustrated even though they are capable of doing something? There are, among others, two main reasons。 First, these people do have a correct estimate of themselves。 Second, they overestimate the difficulties。

It is possible to build up faith in oneself by having the right attitude towards one’s abilities。 We should never underestimate one’s abilities。 But believe in the proverb: “Where there is a will, there is a way。” Confidence is the promise for fulfilling a task successfully。

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen。 Today I would like to begin with a story。

Yes, that’s a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called Gorillas in the Mist, based on a true story of Mrs。 Dian Fossey, who spent most of bet lifetime in Rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life。

To me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a 6) timeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our ecoenvironment。

All these 7) appalling(令人震惊的) facts have brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been 8) eroding(侵蚀) our resources。 Encouragingly, the explosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the United Nations has made 20xx the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the world‘s attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our ecoenvironment。

Now every year, many local ecoenvironmental protection organizations an: receiving donations--big notes, small notes or even coins--from housewives, 9) plumbers(水管工人), ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and 10) invalids(残疾人), Some of them can not afford to send the money but they do。 These are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from ecological damage in their neighborhood。 Why? Because they care。 Because they still want their Mother Nature back。 Because they know it still belongs to them。

This kind of feeling that I have, ladies and gentlemen, is when it feels like it, smells like it, and looks like it, it’s all coming from a scene to remember, a scene to recall and to cherish。

The other night, as l saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs。 I found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to some- thing else, someplace else。 a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seem to have been except the deer。

And all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it‘s lime for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation。

Once again, I have come to think of Mrs。 Dian Fossey be- cause it’s with her spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of our ecoenvironment that we are taking our next step into the world。

And no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our mind, there‘s always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it。

  Thank you very much。

good morning, dear teacher and my friends。

Most people would like to be popular with others, but not everyone can achieve this goal。What is the secret to popularity? In fact,it is very simple。The first step is to improve our appearance。We should always make sure that we stay in good shape and dress well。When we are healthy and well-groomed,we will not only look better but also feel better。In addition,we should smile and appear friendly。After all,our facial expression is an important part of our appearance。If we can do this, people will be attracted to our good looks and impressed by our confidence。

Another important step is developing more consideration for others。We should always put others first and place their interests before our own。It‘s also important to be good listeners;in this way people will feel comfortable enough to confide in us。However,no matter what we do,we must not gossip。Above all,we must remember to be ourselves, not phonies。Only by being sincere and respectful of others can we earn their respect。If we can do all of the above,I am sure popularity will come our way。

  Thank you!

  good morning/evening/afternoon,ladies and gentlemen:

today,my speech is about talents,in my opionion, talents are indispensable in nowadays society。 as is known to all that the fight among countries is actually the fight among talents。

first,i’d like to define the word”talent" in my idea,a talent is one person who is good at or expertised in some or multiple areas。 nowadays,as the world developing goes on,if one country want to rank top or do a good job in the world, the country must have many example, china, the biggest developing country in the world,in the past 100 years,is always invaded by other countries, why, the reason is that china at that time had not so many talents。 if they had anti—intrusion leader talents in the war, needless to say, they would have beat those big they had talents in weapons manufacturing, nodody dares to provoke ver, nowadays,it‘s a totally different situation, china has become powerfulin all over the world, why?because there are many talents serving the country, the civilians become more and more and more people go to university, more and more people come to receive further education。 so what is that in return, talents in army protect our country from invasion, talents in commerce help make our economy keep in improving, talents in aerospace make the world see chinese manned spacecraft flying。 talents in sports make china rank the first in the olympic games。。。。。。

to sum up,talents will play a more and more impoetant role in the world,if one country intends to flourish,he must foster talents as many as they can, that’s all, thank you。

  Staying Connected Or Losing Connection?

Recently, I was walking in a park with a friend, and his mobile phone rang, interrupting our talk。 There we were, walking and talking on a beautiful sunny day and oops, I become invisible, absent from the conversation。

I’m wondering how strange it is that the telephone used to connect you to the absent, but now, it makes people who sitting next to you feel absent。

That’s the funny thing happened on the way to the communications revolution, we stopped talking to another。 It is that all the communications technology tools make me feel lonely。

Every advance in communications technology is a setback to the intimacy of human interaction。 You can’t even call a person to get the phone number of another person anymore。 Directory assistance is becoming increasingly automated。

I’m not a Luddite。 I know that if I dial 110,I could get instant help in only 3 minutes from policeman whenever and wherever。 What’s more, I own a cell phone, an ATM card, a voice-mail system, and E-mail account。 Giving them up is an option。 But as a matter of fact, they are great for what they are intended to do, it’s their unintended consequences that make me cringe。

The communications industry devoted to facilitating my anti-social instincts。 So, I’m starting my own technology revolution: no more instant messaging with people who live near me; no more talking on the mobile in the presents of friends; no more letting the voice-mail pick up a call when I’m free。

Can you imagine that: if there is no one in the room to hear you exclaim: that’s miraculous! So, tell me what good is all this miraculous technology?
